I love this little box. By far my secret weapon. Just plug the rca in/out into a loop and you have an instant noise synth that still has a free normal in/out. I love the great crackly sounds it makes pluging a contact mic into it, the added layers of drones it gives by pulgging in a synth and ridding the input fader, and the lo-fi mess it does to vocals is awesome! On it's own it's not much, but does give a nice lo-fi smear to vocals or tape loops. Using the rca's in a loop is where it really shines though. I buy every one of these I see and can see it being seen as an "analog classic" in the future.

Used one of these all through the 90's with TRJ. Still pull
it out sometimes. For guitar it works great as a distortion
when used in line with a few other pedals, maybe a wah.
Just let the guitar feed back and move the sliders. Also
good for distorting vocals with an almost slapback type
sound. Don't expect to use this as a standard clean
reverb or delay. Much better as a distortion/noisemaker.

I was given this in exchange for another effects unit.
I found it was too harsh and 'electronic' sounding for guitar BUT when I used with a microphone and played blues harp through it WOW. It is just perfect to get that harsh attack-laden sound that is just right for blues harp & vocals.

I was somewhat disappointed with my unit. Other than a short, lo-fi reverb effect and a bit of gain, this unit did little either processing a signal source, mic feedback, or a feedback loop.

I have one and it is everything everyone has said and less.
But -- here's the kicker -- there's a PLUG-IN simulation as part of the Audio Damage plug set (US)... so if I could have held off for twenty years I could have spent more and been able to use this crucial piece of gear on multiple tracks at once without strapping it on a buss...

Like everyone has said, this thing is great as a feedback loop. You get all kinds of nasty synth and noise tones out of it, it's like a crazy mini-synth in the palm of your hand. The reverb is terrible, like others have said, but you can play with the sliders and fuck up your sounds. These things are really cheap, i'd suggest picking one up.

This thing is my secret weapon. Definetly a horrible "real" reverb sound but as a noisemaker it is incredible. Great as a distortion maker if the microphone gain is cranked. Great for making outer space/ufo sounds by changing the delay setting in a delay loop.
I have a second one that is older, in a stereo console, not the black box, that is a gain monster too but the signal is much cleaner. I use it as an initial preamp for my contact mics...

The actual reverb effect for these things absolutely blows, but when you throw it in a feedback loop they are the dog's bollocks.
You'll definately surprise yourself by the sounds that you do get out of it, and the sounds that you know it made once but never can get it to do again.
I have 2 of the damned things, and it would appear that these things sound and behave entirely different from unit to unit.

i think this thing is strange its seen used quite often and sounds great used in a clean analogue signal but can get quite messy with distortion and hard to control. the sound is very clean i swear the circuits in side are being changed around on me spies are working on it as we speak its freaky dont ask

I used to own 2 of these way back in the day!!! For the late 80's, this unit was THE thing for reverb. The four sliders were great for tweaking and you could find numerous sounds all at the slide of a finger! It's a bit out-dated by today's standards, but is still fun to play with 'old school'!! A lot of potential/space for circuit-benders too. Pick one up if you find one cheap (like a lot of these fellow post-ers did!!)

Nice and cheap. As the others have said, a definate sleeper in a field of all effects pedals. The sounds you can get out of this simple beast is amazing..and the distortion it gets when the 'mic' level goes too high is grand.

Great Analog delay unit. Very old school dub/reggae sounding. I use it on an aux send on my mixer, than return it to an open channel, then use the return channel's aux send to get the feedback loop going. I use the mic i/o. Turning up the mic fader gives a really nice and smooth distortion. Get a feedback loop going and mess around with the faders, record it and you'll have some interesting noise.

A true hidden treasure. No one would ever think this thing would be such a great sound source. I got it as a cheap reverb unit for live purposes, but then when I used it to feedback into itself, I realized this thing is a much more important part of my set-up. You can really coax a lot of different sounds out of this. I have a few ways I like to add this into my main set-up, but don't want to give away any 'trade secrets'.

I bought this unit a number of years ago--have no idea when RS stopped manufacturing it. It works great for creating simple flanging effects--just set the repeat low; while varying the delay in the lower range slide the depth from bottum to top (0 to 10)--slide controls are perfect for maximum control! Also great for creating feedback loops (as Tim noted) and slap-back.

Great for creating feedback loops. plug the in cord of your effects chain to the mic out jack and out cord of your effects chain in to the mic in jack, then plug a single rca cord into the line out and put a 1/4" plug adaptor at the other end and you are ready to go. You can modulate the feedback using the four sliders and your chain of effects pedals... Rat shack stopped selling these awhile ago, but they are readily available on eBay and at garage sales.
