Monotonic Labs TYPE-U73 synthesizer
Monotonic Labs TYPE-U73 synthesizer There is no input, only an output (line level quarter inch mono). The Type-U73 synthesizer creates low frequency sweeps, areggiated stepped tones, feedback, thermin noises, etc. There are 2 knobs labeled [x] and f[x]. f[x] serves as the rate for the oscillator, and [x] plays off the position of f[x] doing sweeps, stepped tones, etc. Wherever f[x] is set will determine what [x] sounds like. f[x] also serves as pitch control.

Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $99.00

I've got the slightly newer version of this, with the x and y knobs..On its own the synth produces lowish tractor noise sounds(think distortion pedal in a floop by itself) and some nice squelly tones as well..While some of the sounds without using the control input are neat it doesnt have that much variety or range..Until you plug in something to the control input..Then this thing morphs into a Orphan-Devouring noise machine..I used a harmonica in the control with a DOD death metal..Intense as hell, the synths arsenal of sounds grew extensivly and much more interesting.

Good Points: Not as expensive as some synths.
Heavy duty construction allows this item to double as a self defense unit when playing shows in shady areas. The ''EEE"" tones..Fuck yeah, high end massacre. The control input is the key to getting this baby to rock..

Bad Points: Very little variety without using the control input or a selection of pedal effects. one of the knobs causes a horrible horrible volume drop when cranked all the way in one direction.

This is really lovely either on it's own or running another signal through it. Simple, and yet unpredictable

Definintely one of the more versatile "oscillators" out there dedicated to unusual music. Despite the fac that there are only two knobs, the thing is incredibly diverse sound-wise. I have the later version, which has an "X" knob and a "Y" knob, but from what I can tell, it's not too different from this one. Although the X knob is sort of the "contour/filter" knob, and the Y knob is the "pitch/frequency" knob, turning both to various odd positions will yield some very unexpected sounds. When it comes to knob-controlled mini-synths, I'm pretty picky...and this one fulfilled all my needs.

Good Points: Each slight turn of both knobs heavily affects the sound

Very responsive

Simple design

Works woderfully with effects, unlike some other oscillators

Bad Points: A little unpredictable, but that's not what I was looking for anyways.
