Guitar players usually don't like this pedal because it is too noisy so they always try use a noise gate with it. But that would defeat the purpose of good sounding noise, wouldn't it?!
Beyond that, it's got a pretty good, trebly "crunch"... but there is very little tonal variation... The PRESENCE knob is kind of a tone control, and it will change the sound some, but it's really the only knob that does anything very noticeable.
Surprisingly, I actually like it more as a standalone guitar distortion (I like the "tone" of it, and it self-oscillates endlessly any time you aren't playing). It also works well right after a sampler or phrase-sampling toy, and perhaps for tapes, too.
I don't really use it much *inside* a feedback loop, though.
I can't really remember how much I paid, but I'm sure it was more than I should have. Still, I don't regret it.
Good Points: Has a good sound on it's own, though it's not something I'd consider "CRUCIAL" unless you just really like DOD distortions.
It self-oscillates really easily like many (or all) high-gain DOD pedals.
I really like the ridiculously-80's paint job... BLACKLIGHT TIME!
Bad Points: Lower volume than some of my other DOD distortions.
Not a lot of tonal variation.
It seems to be gaining a "collector's item" status on places like ebay, which means it's harder to find them for less than, say, 45-50 bucks now.
Good Points: Wicked harsh distortion
three knobs
that crackle
dod tank like quality
Neon green paint
Cheap
Bad Points: Power supply (i just use a one spot adaptor)
other than that not much it's a good cheap distortion
Good Points: Great high distortion for any chain. No confusing silly names for what the knobs do.
Bad Points: Only three knobs not the usual four of later DOD distortions
Good Points: dod quality metal box
loud
powerful grinding distortion
cheap!
Bad Points: dod quality switch!
Good Points: sturdy DOD construction (I got mine used and it's seemed to hold up nicely for the past 10 years or so), variable DISTORTION/PRESCENCE/LEVEL controls, a nice addition to a noise set-up (tho' shouldn't be used as the only distortion/noise generator)
Bad Points: not available like it once was (thank you EBay!)
Good Points: loud...got to love that pressence knob...solid dod construction. nice range of sound even for a distortion...
Bad Points: could we get an uglier color paint job? stupid power adapter.
