The FX86 creates a grinding wall of noise perfect for harmonic corruption of the highest order. One advantage of the FX86 is it will oscillate when the R. I. P. (LEVEL) control is turned up, allowing oscillation at any amp volume. There is no distortion control. DOD just maxed it out and tore it off!
User Reviews of the DOD Death Metal Distortion FX86:

Despite being called the "death metal" pedal, this thing is great for noise.
Good Points: Standing alone with nothing behind it, it projects a loud gritty tone. Plug anything into this beast and get ready for a roaring (screaming and moaning tones can also be produced via EQ tweaking) sound that can be used when creating a wall of sound. Throwing it inside of a loop will add an extra level of bite into the loop.
Bad Points: No longer made, somewhat of a one trick pony even if the trick is great.

I bought this in 94, so mine is the older model. Better be careful because this box can damage your eardrums if you turn the level to the max. Distortion is one thing, but this box means NOISE!
Good Points: great EQ, lots of choices to suit your needs
Bad Points: it sucks your battery fast, better use an adaptor if you plan to gig with it

these are nasty little things. i have the newer version too and they sound pretty much the same but this one seems to have a less crisp sound to it. pure crust with eq. my favorite distortion. they can rip your face off.
Good Points: heavy distortion with eq. you cannot miss with these pedals. they are cheap nasty and will feedback and destroy any sound put through them.
Bad Points: none.

my FX86 is broken (the input is somehow 'loose'). I remember it had a great gnarling sound when it worked. Now it hisses, clicks, feedbacks randomly, buzzes heavily: it's a noise generator of its own!!! -nice in a feedback loop as someone already said
Good Points: excellent sound
much better battery placement than boss pedals
Bad Points: ext power supply strangely and really inconveniently placed

Very high-gain, ripping distortion, great for noise. The eq knobs have a very wide sweep, and if you turn one up, it affects the other 2, i found out, and it's really intersting to see what each does. The thing oscillates when you have the level (R.I.P.) knob up, and you can tune the pitch of the feedback with the eq knobs, and the best part is, it can be done at any volume by adjusting your amp volume. All in all, a very cool noise pedal.
Good Points: Cheap! looks pretty cool, tons of different sounds, tuneable oscillation at any volume, seems very durable.
Bad Points: cheesy name.

Decimation is a good word to use with this one. Caustic, high-end distortion, and with one turn of a knob you have INSTANT FEEDBACK. Low end is very good on this one as well, gets you the massive JUG on a guitar, or a killer low end rumble on straight noise. So good, I bought 2.
Good Points: -Nastiest distortion around
-Heavy low-end
-Excellent noise pedal
Bad Points: -Typical DOD chassis nuances, but sonically superior.

Mine is the original version of the pedal, w/ the "fuzzy" script and fx86 printed to the right-hand side. I had read somewhere that the original issue of the Death Metal sounded better ("better" being a relative term) than subsequent models, but I seriously can't tell the difference, if there is indeed one at all. Everything I had previously written about the fx86B applies here, just an all around insane distortion for noise.
Good Points: See review under fx86B
Bad Points: In most cases the later issues of this pedal can be had for much less, all you're really paying for is the slightly different paint job.
